EDIT: I’m referring to a 911 call made during a home invasion by a little boy who had the presence of mind to lock himself and his 6-yr-old sis in the bathroom and call the cops. Today Show spotlighted it this morning, as did CNN - in fact, CNN has been wearing the damn thing out - and MSNBC was airing it regularly yesterday. I don’t need to hear that poor kid’s moments of terror over and over even if he didn’t get hurt in the end. I’m really disgusted that news outlets keep on airing the damn thing.

Weird jumpsuit man story: I did a show with an organist who had a photographic memory. Larry could play the entire score from memory and make key changes on the fly. He was amazing that way. He also wore nothing but jumpsuits. He would bite off his fingernails and tuck them in his jumpsuit pocket.

His wife later left him for a female freshman piano major at the college where they taught together.

I bet Larry’s wife’s lesbian lover was never permitted to wear a jumpsuit.

- What in the hell is that supposed to mean? Why can’t a guy who writes Southern-sounding songs actually be from Alabama? Does music have to be made in Brooklyn now? Is that a law or something? Was it okay for him to be from Athens, GA (ALSO IN THE SOUTH), but not from Alabama? Maybe I take this pretty personally as an Alabamian, but this is another small but potent example that much of the criterati thinks that music in America is made in only six or seven cities, and most of it in Brooklyn. When I hear Phosphorescent (old and new), I hear the South: the porch beer, train track, kudzu shack, mountain cabin South. I don’t hear Williamsburg lofts, and I don’t even hear California country. Matthew might live in Brooklyn now, but the guy’s from Alabama. And that’s awesome. He sings like he’s from Alabama, and he doesn’t deny it. And that’s awesome, too. And yet that’s somehow worthy of mention as some sort of surprise? Does anybody know any Southerners besides Kenneth on 30 Rock? I’m not even sure who Matthew Houck is, but I’m signing onto this because I get so fucking tired of all the condescension towards people who are southern-born. My first trip to New York 26 years ago, every fucking cabbie who heard my accent: ‘you’re wearing SHOES?’

I know it was a fucking joke, but you know the attitude isn’t confined to cabbies and it’s readily apparent in quotes like the one above. “OH HEY Y’ALL, THE SOUF DON’T ALWAYS PRODUCE INBRED, TOOTHLESS SEX MANIACS, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!” I STILL encounter shock when some New Yorker or Californian talks to me about some news story I broke wide open and they are SHOCKED, utterly shocked to discover I’m a next-door neighbor to the goddam Designing Women, in their minds. (In fact, Julia Sugarbaker ghost-wrote this rant.)

I’m fine if the person making cracker jokes has a twang like mine and no one is more ready to make white trash/redneck jokes than I am but I’m FROM HERE. I really do get sick and fucking tired of the condescension from OTHER parts of the country after awhile.
